SHARON SVEC

I wanted to be an artist, but I was cautious with my approach... I pursued “Visual Communication,” a program of the College of Art and Design at Southern Illinois University. My career followed accordingly with jobs in the printing and publishing industries, as well as in marketing and communication. I moved to Vancouver in 2008, and in my personal time I enjoyed performance, dance and visual art through partnerships with local theater companies and other artists.

In 2014 I became pregnant, and my pursuits in performance were curbed by an especially cautious medical industry. To appease the doctors, I refrained from “excessive movement” and started creating tapestries through an original process of exposing images onto fabric, and layering with various stenciling techniques.

I used dancers as my subjects, learning about their history and influence on culture through the process. I seek depth, movement and expression in my work. I visit a world beyond my own, where threads, dye and paint come together for a performance which intertwines space and time. It’s incredibly meaningful to me to share these works, and to offer new perspectives in art and it’s influence on our lives.
